Indian Gooseberry / Amla   - Phyllantus emblica / Emblica officinalis , Family:  Euphorbiaceae

The Indian Gooseberry (amla) is a fruit that grows on a tree. It is rich in Vitamin C , Iron, Calcium, Phosphorous and Vitamin B1. This fruit is one of the richest sources of Vitamin C and Iron. An indication of the vitamin C content can be gauged from a comparative example. One tablespoonful of amla juice gives as much vitamin C as one gets from almost 9 Kgs of medium sized oranges ( of 150-170 g. each). 

The Indian gooseberry is widely used in Indian Ayurveda and Unani medicine systems. The best way to consume amla is raw (fresh) with a little salt. Cooking it, reduces the vitamin C content.

Amla juice can be prepared as follows. Wash the fruit well in running water. Crush lightly and remove the seed. Then grind well in a mixer, dilute with water and strain. This juice should be consumed fresh.

A tablespoonful of the fresh juice mixed with an equal quantity of honey taken in the morning is an excellent tonic for the lungs and helps in the treatment of asthma, bronchitis. As this juice is rich in iron and minerals also, it is very beneficial for treatment of anaema and helps increase the low haemoglobin levels.

A table spoonful of amla juice mixed in a cup of buttermilk, helps stimulate the body to produce more insulin and is beneficial for people suffering from mild type 2 diabetes.  Try this remedy for a month to see significant improvement in the quality of life and low medicine dependence.

A tablespoonful of Indian gooseberry juice mixed with a cupful of coconut water taken morning and evening for a week to ten days, helps the body expel tapeworms and hookworms. Try this safe and natural cure for this very irritating problem.

A tablespoonful of amla juice with an equal amount of honey ( taken twice daily)  also helps in improving eyesight, and helps cure conjunctivitis and glucoma.

The high content of vitamin C in the Amla is excellent in boosting body immunity and helps prevent against infections and seasonal flu.

Paste of the leaves (apx. one tablespoon), mixed with honey or buttermilk helps in cases of dysentery and diarrhoea.

Amla as a Beauty Aid
