The Lady Finger - Okra -   Hibiscus esculentus / Abelmoschus esculentus, Family: Malvaceae


The Lady Finger is grown all over the world and is rich in Carbohydrates, Proteins, Calcium, Phosphorus, Magnesium, Potassium along with Vitamin A, B1 and B2.

Lady fingers have mucilage in them which acts as a binding substance. It is sticky and if cut lady finger is cooked wet, it will become a sticky mess. That is why lady fingers (pods) have to be cleaned, dried and then cooked.

This sticky mucilage is used as a soothing treatment for diarrhea, dysentery, gastric ulcer and colitis. However excessive use of pods can cause digestive problems.

This mucilage can be used in the following way.

Take 5 tender lady fingers and cut them into one inch pieces. Boil them in 250 ml of water for about fifteen minutes. Cool and squeeze the pieces to extract the mucilage. by straining through a muslin cloth. To this mucilage / sticky substance, add a tablespoonful (10ml) of honey and a pinch of rock salt ( table salt).

The above mixture can be  taken once daily as a treatment for burning in the throat , burning in the stomach ( caused by ulcers, hot and spicy food and infections) and for burning urine and burning feeling in the rectum. 

This mixture also soothes, irritating coughs, and burning/ scraping sensation in the throat due to enlarged tonsils and laryngitis.


Lady Fingers as a Beauty aid

Pulp of the pods rich in mucilage, vitamins, potassium, phosphorus, magnesium and calcium are very useful in treating skin related problems. Apply the pulp over the face ( before going to bed) and leave on for half an hour. Wash with cold water. Daily application will lead to softening of the skin, reduction of pimples, boils and will also act as a natural whitening agent .

Take the pulp and rub on the scalp in the morning once a week. leave on for an hour and then wash off with a natural shampoo. This natural herbal treatment will help in controlling dandruff and also reduce hair fall.



Excessive intake of the pods can cause indigestion. The pods should be cooked dry or the mucilage will create a sticky mess.
