The Radish - Raphanus Sativus , Family:  Cruciferae

The humble radish plant is cultivated in many parts of the world for its tap root known as Radish.

Radish is a very useful vegetable containing many minerals and vitamins including Vitamin B1, B2, Niacin, Vitamin C, Sodium, Potassium, Calcium, Phosphorous, Iron and small amounts of carbohydrates, fat and Vitamin A.. It also contains a pungent volatile oil that has a marked carminative action ( expels gas from the digestive tract). This is the reason why raw radish should not be eaten on an empty stomach.

Radish can be used to treat many stomach and  kidney related problems as follows.

Eat a few slices of raw radish with salt, pepper and a few drops of lime juice thrice daily as a treatment for piles, constipation, colic and indigestion. This also helps during the treatment of jaundice and liver problems.

Squeeze juice out of the radish root and the leaves (together) and drink a cupful everyday to help flush out small kidney stones. It takes up to a fortnight to see viable results. This remedy is also very useful for people who have gall bladder stones.

Radish juice also helps in conditions of painful and burning urine and minor kidney related problems.

Add radish juice to warm salty water and gargle with it. This helps in conditions of throat ulcers and painful sore throat conditions.

Some abdominal pains are caused by retention of gas. This gas can be expelled using the carminative action of the radish. Simply add a pinch of salt and black peeper to half a glass of radish juice and drink up. Now close your nose and wait for the gas to be expelled.

A teaspoonful of fresh radish juice mixed with equal quantity of honey and a little rock salt, given thrice daily is a useful remedy in cases of whooping cough and bronchitis.

Radish as a Beauty aid

Radish seeds contain a bleaching substance. Boil seeds in water, and then cool the emulsion and apply over the face to remove black heads and freckles. Radish juice mixed with raw milk applied over the face also helps in treating freckles and allergic skin conditions.

Radish can also be used as a skin moisturizing and  revitalizing agent. Mix radish juice with an equal amount of butter and rub into the skin,  half an hour before a bath. This will enable your skin to glow and feel fresh and revitalized.

I hope you will now look at the humble radish with a new found respect. These solutions are courtesy Indian Ayurveda research and insights granted by holy texts.
