The Water - Melon  - Citrullus- vulagaris , Family:  Cucurbitaceae

A summer fruit grown in the sandy bed of rivers, this fruit has as spongy pink and red pulp, rich in water, Potassium, Magnesium. It contains smaller amounts of Carbohydrate, Calcium, Vitamin B1 and   Vitamin C. The hundreds or black or chocolate colored seeds are especially useful as they contain a compound which is particularly useful in high blood pressure control and kidney problems.

Watermelon is a great thirst quencher. It contains the most water in any fruit and helps rejuvenate the body after a hot tiring day. It is rich in potassium, sodium, and magnesium and helps replace mineral lost  from the body  due to excessive perspiration.  

The juice of a watermelon combined with a couple of spoonfuls of honey  is an excellent tonic for people suffering from fever and helps the body recoup faster.

In severe heat, people suffering from heat stroke can find relief in a glassful of water melon juice with a couple of spoonful of sugar mixed in.

Water melons are useful for people suffering from low blood count ( low hemoglobin levels). It is rich in various minerals and helps in improving the blood haemoglobin levels.

Water melon juice is diuretic in nature. It is therefore useful in mild kidney related problems and scanty urination. A glassful of juice mixed with a spoonful of honey helps in renal disorders associated with sodium and water retention. However, in cases of  kidney failure, this juice should be avoided.

A glassful of this juice mixed with half a glass of butter milk and a pinch of common salt is excellent tonic for jaundice, burning urine and scanty urination.

Eating  watermelons regularly helps regulate bowel movement and helps relieve minor constipation.  This fruit is therefore specially useful for those living a sedentary lifestyle.

The seeds of the fruit are especially useful.

Chew a few seeds every day to find a cooling effect in the heat and an energetic body.

The whitish juice of the seeds ( one tablespoonful ), taken daily helps in reducing high blood pressure. It also helps in reducing cholesterol levels and helps protect the arteries of the heart.

A teaspoonful of the milky seed juice taken twice a day helps renal patients reduce the swelling in the legs and feet. It is particularly useful in minor kidney related problems.

Water melons as a Beauty Aid

The fresh fruit eaten daily does wonders for the skin and hair as it is rich in minerals and antioxidants. It is a great low calorie thirsty quencher and rejuvenates the body.

Precautions

The Ayurveda writings suggest that watermelons should be avoided by patients of asthma. It is seen to aggravate the condition in some cases. 

It is also suggested that water melons may be avoided after a rich food.  In this case, the juice seems to cause stomach cramps and diarrhoea.
